March 'Calliope and Columbine'
Tell us a little about your piece?
I have been playing with the idea of making a hovering hummingbird sculpture for a while now and this calendar was the perfect opportunity to do it! It wasn't easy to choose what kind of hummingbird I would like to make though, since there are so many beautiful and extraordinary ones out there!
But then I remembered when I was traveling along the US west coast and first saw a hummingbird in Oregon and decided to create one that can be found there, a (male) calliope hummingbird.
What was the most challenging part of the brief?
The size! It is only the second bird sculpture I made and this kind of hummingbird is so tiny (around 9 cm)! It was quite a challenge to make the paper feathers in the right size.
What part of the collaboration did you enjoy the most?
I really love that we as a community of artists are creating something that is not just beautiful to look at but also raises money for important charity projects like the Art Refuge!
