Tell us a little about your piece?
This piece explores the beauty of winter from a non-human perspective. It's about long, cold nights and the peaceful slumber of the trees during the darkest time of year. Yet life persists in the roots underground and the beating hearts of the creatures of the woods. Warmth and summer will return, but for now, the forest sleeps beneath blankets of white snow, and the flow of the seasons rests for a moment in silence.
What was the most challenging part of the brief?
As someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense, I wanted to find a way to express the spirit of the season in a way that felt authentic to me. I most palpably feel a sense of the spiritual when in nature, so I chose to focus on the ordinary magic of a winter sunset over snowy mountains and pine forests. This piece speaks to the interconnection of all life, and what could be more holy than that remembrance?
What part of the collaboration did you enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed seeing the wide breadth of creativity the other artists of the collective brought to this assignment. It's amazing to see how you can give a group of artists the exact same materials and they will all come up with such unique, beautiful, and unexpected results.
How did you enjoy working with the paper sent?
This paper was great to work with. It was super easy to cut but also durable. The gold paper in particular is absolutely gorgeous and I'm glad I have a few sheets left over to keep experimenting with.
