The birth of flight

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm a 30 year-old paper artist from a tiny town in the north-east of Romania. I am one of eleven children and I enjoy interpreting my surroundings with the help of paper. My professional background is in the study of languages and culture, but I decided to pursue paper art full time 2 years ago.

Tell us a little bit about your interpretation of Paper Passion?

I wanted to create something that would celebrate my favourite medium - paper, and some of the themes that are closest to my heart, such as origami, wings and feathers. In this case, passion is both the means and the end. It is the wings and the act of flying at the same time.

Tell us a little about your piece?

The birth of flight' is the embodiment of some of my deepest passions. The central element is an unfolded traditional origami crane, painted with gold ink. I placed the five pairs of wings around it in order to give it an angelic character. It is a respectful nod to religious art. The overall theme is an impossible yearning to take flight: literally and metaphorically.

What was the most challenging part of the brief?

As with most of my work, the biggest challenge was materialising the initial concept. I had a vivid image of what I wanted this piece to look like. I had to write down each element and the creation process before I could sit down and actually start working. I took my time, and I am very happy with how everything turned out. It is a faithful rendition of what I imagined for this project.

What part of the brief did you enjoy the most?

As much as I enjoy working on a project with very specific requirements, I also love the freedom to create something that is the result of my instinctual reaction to an abstract idea. This has been a thoroughly enjoyable challenge.

How did you enjoy working with Munken and Arctic Volume?

Both types of paper were a joy to work with. They folded and cut beautifully. And they are holding up the creases and scores perfectly.
