Mandarin 135gsm
Tell us a little about your piece?
My piece is inspired by life under the sea and the interesting textures and shapes of coral reefs. When I was given mandarin as my colour, I instantly associated it with sea creatures and from that point decided to create a scene celebrating the richness and beauty of Ocean life. The design was sketched out, then each element was cut and assembled by hand from different layers of orange paper. I wanted to make something which draws the eye in, so had the idea of framing my paper scene inside a porthole. This also allowed me to create many layers, which added depth to the final piece.
What was the most challenging part of the brief?
The most challenging part of the brief for me was creating the 3D porthole around the outside, as I usually work with 2D pieces. I enjoyed experimenting with the different ways to do this and eventually found something that worked!
What part of the brief did you enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed assembling all the papercut elements and creating a 3D scene from what essentially started as a flat drawing. It was so satisfying to see it all come to life and it was fun adding extra details as I went along.
