Tell us a little about your piece?
My letter C is made from thinly cut strips of paper. Each one is hand cut with a knife and woven into position. I wanted to create the curve of the C with straight lines and I explored a few different ideas based on maths and string art, but this evolved into a more organic technique of wrapping the cut paper to create the letter. My final piece emerged gradually with each strip added to create a balance of colours and an even web of criss-crossing lines.
What was the most challenging part of the brief?
My work usually uses straight lines so to be asked to produce a curved shape was a challenge for me! As I work quite organically it can be hard to decide when to stop adding pieces and making tiny changes.
What part of the brief did you enjoy the most?
I loved being given the colours I had to use. Usually I spend a lot of time making colour decisions! I also really enjoyed being part of a bigger project and seeing the alphabet my piece will be part of slowly appear.
How did you enjoy working with Senses Paper?
The colours are beautiful and the paper is very smooth. I usually work with paper that has a more 'paper' texture. I felt that the different colours had a slightly different feel, despite them being the same weight. The lighter colours were more fragile and the darker colour seemed more robust.
