Tell us a little about your piece?

My piece is based around constrast. W to me is quite a rigid and straight letter so I wanted to introduce some curves into it whilst reflecting it's symmetry which is a recurrent feature in my work in general. I use lace based patterns and selected one which I felt gave me scope for cutting it in different ways to showcase each colour but still keeping the piece formal and symmetrical.

What was the most challenging part of the brief?

I found creating the base letter quite challenging. I didn't want to use a preexisting font for the letter and if I use writing within my work it's normally my own handwriting so creating a legible letter with the correct proportions that I could then work the lace around was challenging.

What part of the brief did you enjoy the most?

I quite enjoyed the restricted colour palette as it was a very different way for me to work. I normally work in lots of colours, specifically my own 13 colour rainbow, so to take this down to 3 colours forced me to consider how I would layer and place these colours next to each other to keep the piece looking dynamic and not too saturated or dominated by one colour or another. The blues and orange work really well together so it was really enjoyable to work with those colours.

How did you enjoy working with Senses Paper?

The paper was beautiful to work with. The smooth surface was great to draw on and then to cut it was clean and strong, even with some finer details and I'm sure it would hold up to even finer work. Some papers can be fibrous and doesn't give a clean edge but the Senses papers definitely cut smoothly without any fluffy bits. The colours are vibrant and I would be very interested to see the rest of the collection in real life based on these 3 colours alone I will definitely be adding them to my suppliers list.
