Tell us a little about your piece?

The work is called "The Geometric Giant's Causeway". Taking inspiration from the hexagons and derived geometries of the Giant's Causeway off the coast of Northern Ireland. Geometries in nature inspire me to research, investigate and create my art. This natural formation is actually millions of interlocking basalt columns formed as a result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. The result is a fabulous array of folded hexagons. In my work the letter 'G' is shaped with the hexagons  and derived geometries of the Giant's Causeway. Nature and Folding combine and are paid homage to and celebrated.

What was the most challenging part of the brief?

Finding a unique idea to represent the letter 'G' appropriately was the most interesting challenge of the brief. While every artist who was given a letter would have their own distinct concept, I had to discover an expression that would combine my love of folding and research into geometries in nature into a work that would clearly and distinctly represent the letter 'G'. Forming the letter 'G' from the modules was very much like the making of a new font style, and I am very tempted now to create the entire alphabet with this geometric style.

What part of the brief did you enjoy the most?

The most enjoyable part was the making of it. The process of deriving the modules, making them and then assembling the whole into a full 'G' was great fun. Photographing the work during its various stages and then on its completion was also very engrossing and visually captivating. Being a three dimensional sculpture, the artwork looks different from different angles and that was the real joy of the final outcome.

How did you enjoy working with Senses Paper?

Really enjoyed. I had intentionally asked for very thick paper, and received 500 GSM. I want to create solid and robust-looking 3D forms, something that suggested stone and rock, and the paper brought out the geometries really well. Working with a thick grammage is always a challenge, but the paper was beautiful and smooth, and such a joy to work with.
